For those of you who do not get social media, let me list your objections and complaints first:

  • Why would anybody want to spend all that time at a computer?
  • Why do people do it, what do they get from it?
  • Why do I want to have to maintain so many profiles.
  • I do not have the time.
  • I do not have the money.
  • I need to be busy doing something else.

Now that we got that out of the way:

  1. Why would anybody want to spend all that time at a computer?  Have you ever driven in traffic?  I prefer the computer.
  2. Why do people do it, what do they get from it?  A full time living from home.  All the leads they need for any business for free.
  3. Why do I want to have to maintain so many profiles.  If you do not manage your reputation, somebody else will, and you will not like it.
  4. I do not have the time.  The most time efficient, cost effective form of prospecting in the world is online -  if you are too lazy, hire us!
  5. I do not have the money. You do not have money because you do not get that the entire world has moved online.  Social Media is almost free!
  6. I need to be busy doing something else.  Not unless you have more business than you can handle you don't!

Some things never change.  20% of the people do 80% of the work.  They also live longer, earn more, have more wholesome lives, bear more children, are loved and remembered more, and are fulfilled.

I have spent ten months writing this short guide to some basics about social media marketing, and marketing in general (he-he), and it is time to bring this edition to a close.  However, before we do that, lets recap what is covered: a comprehensive plan for creating a social movement online, on purpose, from scratch;  a predetermined self-fulfilling prophecy of success at UpLog.org; step by step documentation and proof of the progress, tracking of results; a successful social media launch understandably done right in from of you with open source scripting available to everyone; a value-added enhancement and innovation which solves an old problem and a new one, hand-held navigation;  supported ourselves while we did it (sort of lol); raised the money to go to next level.

7 Excel Charts You Should Be Using Daily [Video Tutorial]

In keeping with my revolt against ugly data, we're going to be turning our attention this time to how to make data visual.

If you missed Part 1 of my Making Data Sexy series, I covered cool tips for formatting data in Excel, including how to:

  • Format as a table
  • Format cells
  • Filter and sort your data
  • Use conditional formatting (the only way to add sex appeal to a table)
  • De-clutter your spreadsheets

Now it's time for the fun stuff…

In the video below I'll show you how to set up graphs in Excel (because PCs and Macs don’t differ that much when it comes to charts I just did one video).  I will be compiling into 15 minutes what has taken me a couple years of intensive concentration to learn. It’s everything I learned the hard way by poring over Excel books at the gym, in nail and beauty salons, on airplanes, at sporting events, you name it. Yes, I’m that girl. You’re welcome.

But before we jump in, it's really important to understand when to use each chart type. I'm going to just cover the ones I use daily — and so should you. They’re easy once you understand the basics.

Column Chart

This is my chart du jour. There is rarely a day that goes by that I don’t at least reference one. The column chart is great for most tasks.

You can chart out one item at a time like this:

Or if you have multiple items, you have two choices. You can either cluster them like this:

Line Chart

If I have a lot of data points I'm charting out, I tend to use line charts. They're especially ideal to show fluctuations over time.

Here's an example of one that shows Facebook engagements over a period of a month:

You can do stacked line charts over time, but I'm not a fan. I'd much prefer to display the data as an…

Area Chart

In the same way I'm not a fan of stacked line charts, I'm only a fan of stacked area charts. The reason is that if it's clustered, you could have data hiding behind whatever data series is in front. It’s tantamount to sticking the shortest kid in the class behind Baby Huey for a class pic. I was one of the two shortest kids in my class all through elementary school (I shot up to average in high school). That would not be a cool thing to do to your vertically-challenged data.

However, the stacked area chart is great for charts that have a lot of data points because you see how each piece contributes to the total, like so:

Pie Chart

The pie chart is to be treated with caution. I’ll use a pie chart if I have less than 10 data points, but I try to keep it closer to six.  Here’s an example of one that I pulled apart slightly to make the organic traffic pop more.

Combination Charts

There are times when you want to show two different metrics that have either different units of measurement or are so different in their values, one data set dwarfs the other. Good examples of these would be visits vs. bounce rate, visits vs. conversion rate, unique visitors vs. revenue, conversions vs. conversion rate, page authority and domain authority vs. number of partial match links, etc.

I'll show you in the video below how to create charts like this:

But if you want to kick off your Excel exploits by practicing with the data I use in the video, I compiled a starter spreadsheet that contains just the data for all the charts I went through here. Go play with the data and get comfortable with Excel’s charting tools.

I’m (barely) resisting the urge to say 15 minutes will save you 15 hours of data or more on wrestling with data. But you can be the judge of that. Enjoy, data gumshoes!

P.S. Being from New Jersey, I have never talked as slowly as I did in this video my life! But, per Jon Henshaw’s advice, I recorded the video first and then made the audio to fit, and I gave myself too much time. I’ll get the hang over this eventually. I also aim to remember to plug my microphone in every time I record. Derp!

As an Internet marketer I am always on the hunt for new content marketing tools that can increase my efficiencies and improve engagement with my audience.  I cannot begin to express how valuable content curation can be if done right.  It will allow you tap into and respond to what people are searching for, what they like to read and share, what influences their buying decisions and so on.  In my search for a new means of marketing I came across a tool called Scoop.It.  Below I have detailed my review of this tool including some of it’s cool features.

There were a lot of interesting tools on the list but one stood out, Scoop.it so I decided to look into it further.  The first thing I noticed is that the tool is in beta and I needed to sign up for an invite to be able to use this tool.  I'm happy to say my request was granted just 48 hours after submission, so right away I started to like Scoop.it (Once you are in and hit a minimum level of use, you are awarded 9 invites).

A few of the things in the post about Scoop.it that caught my eye were the ability to use an unlimited amount of sources (websites, RSS feeds, specific social media accounts, etc.).  The ability to us RSS feeds is important because I'm a big fan of Google Reader and already have a number of feeds I could use for some of my Scoop.it topics.

The other feature that peaked my interest was the ability to feed keywords into the tool and let it find content based on those.  As an SEO consultant and practitioner, I have great confidence that by choosing the best, most relevant keywords, I can seriously influence the quality of the content I receive from the tool.  I also know that if my first round of keywords doesn't deliver exactly what I'm looking for, I can continue to adjust and fine tune my keywords until the curation tool delivers what I want.

I've been using Scoop.it for 4 weeks now and I must say it's been a lot of fun and very easy to use.  The first thing you do after signing up is add the Scoop.it button to your tool bar so you can easily add posts as you find them.  I've installed the button on both Firefox and Chrome.

When you find a post/article that you want to save and click on the Scoop.it button, a dashboard appears on the right side of the page presenting you with a number of cool options.  From the pop-up dashboard you can choose which topic to add it to, change the title, image and intro copy and choose which if any of your social channels you also want to share this post on.

When you share the post on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, another box opens so you can add a comment.  Then, when it appears on your social media profile, the tiny url that is automatically created, directs readers to the story on your Scoop.it topic page.  This is a great way to build followers and encourage sharing and, if you doing a great job of curating for a topic, you will see more followers and shares.

Overall my experience with Scoop.it has been very good. With the few issues I did have I was able to submit my question to support and receive a response in less than 24 hours.  I've been using the tool to curate content 3-5 hours each week and the more I use it and learn how to use it even better, the more I want to use it.

That said, there are 3 things I wish Scoop.it would add to this tool;

  • The ability to add multiple Twitter accounts
  • The ability to schedule sharing (It's no mystery that there are better days and times for seeing re-tweets and shares )
  • A more impressive landing page for our topics (like Paper.li, etc.)
  • Ability to search on each topic page

While I  think Scoop.it is a great tool and with the addition of the items above it will be even better, I’m still on the lookout for the “perfect” content curation tool.  Let me know if you think you’ve found it!

* The domain age is fairly young (less than 5 years old).

* The niche is not incredibly lucrative or super competitive.

So what is the big secret?

There is no secret. I started a website from scratch about 4 years ago, started putting up “real” articles, and over 1 million words later, Google seems to really, really like the website.

It is, of course possible to make good money with much less traffic than this. Your site topic and niche have everything to do with this, as well as how you go about monetizing. Sometimes a fairly small niche can be well served by a killer product that you create yourself, or by a unique monetization method.

But ultimately, the learning starts with traffic generation.

You publish content, then you promote that content.

Then you see what happens. What shows up. Does the traffic convert, does it bounce, which keywords are driving the most volume, and so on.

And at some point, given a decent topic selection process, you will presumably start to earn some income from this tiny traffic stream.

At that point, you have to ask yourself:

“Do I want my meager earnings to continue? Or would I like to grow those earnings into a part or full time income?”

If you want to grow the earnings substantially then the you basically have 2 choices:

1) Monetize more efficiently, or
2) Get more traffic.

If your site is still relatively small then pursuing “more traffic” almost always makes more sense before seeking to optimize your revenue per visit. This is because a small testing sample is just going to disappoint you if you start experimenting.

If you go through our topic selection process then you know there is money to be made in your niche. Focus on increasing your traffic first, and do that by increasing article volume.

The advice could be summarized like this:

1) Increase daily article production to increase future revenue.

2) Maintain high quality while doing so.

3) Build a “real” website (not just a content farm full of 550 word articles all perfectly optimized with little variation among them).

Personally, my own flagship website plateaued once at around $500/month. The way I “jump started it” was to start producing multiple articles every single day, and kept that up for several months. In less than a year it shot up over $1,000/month in income and has never looked back.

If search engine traffic makes you money, then you need to increase article production.
